Your New Home Checklist: What to Do Once You Move In

Buying a new home is likely one of the most exciting milestones in your life, whether it’s a starter home or your ultimate dream home. When moving into a new home, most homeowners focus on the process of packing up and moving their possessions. However, there’s a lot more to do than that. Use this checklist for a flawless transition.

Do a walk-through.

Before unpacking your possessions and moving your new furniture into place, you should do a thorough walk-through of every room. Make sure everything is in good working order. Flip the light switches, turn on faucets, and use the electrical outlets.

Childproof or pet-proof your new home.

If you have small children or rambunctious pets, you’ll need to make sure the new home is safe for them. You might want to close off an empty room for pets (just remember to provide the essentials, such as food, water, and a litter box). Before letting your kids run wild in your new space, childproof the electrical outlets, check the blinds, and make sure there are no potentially dangerous items (such as box cutters) within arm’s reach.

Verify your utilities.

It’s ideal to set up the utilities transfer before you move in. However, once you move in, you’ll need to verify that this has been executed. Check that your electric, gas, water, heating and cooling, phone, and internet services are all good to go.

Find the fuse box and water valve.

This is an often overlooked step, but it’s essential for preparing for emergencies. And yes, emergencies could potentially happen right after you move in. Check your garage or utility room for the fuse box. The water valve is typically located on the perimeter of the home.
